Packaging for Electric Vehicle (EV) Automotive

The Electric Vehicle Market is Coming to North America

The automotive market is changing, and that change is coming quickly.

While electric vehicles aren’t new to the market, the volume is increasing across all sectors—including light duty. With volumes expected to grow over 26 million units by 2030, according to Markets and Markets.

For North America, the adoption is a major inflection point of favorable government policies and subsides. Furthermore, heavy investments from automakers within the EV market also mean that supply chains are looking to change as well.

Even as the pandemic was well underway, the EV market is proving to be more resilient than the light duty vehicle market. As market conditions steadily improve for plug-in vehicles, it’s only expected to grow as more state government mandates for zero emissions take hold. Mandates are expected across North America too since British Columbia and Quebec has also announced plans as well.

Creating Sustainability Throughout the Supply Chain

Then, there are newcomers to the market. While Tesla has paved the way, several new startups are vying to become the next Detroit darling in Silicon Valley. Companies like SF Motors and Lucid vow to make California the next Motor City. However, building a sustainable supply chain and processes often take time.

SSI SCHAEFER understands how to create those processes when implementing a supplier network. Even more so, employing a closed loop returnable packaging solution specific for an EV assembly line means finding the right supplier who can offer an array of ESD containers and ESD dunnage for sensitive electronic EV automotive parts.

While regular packaging may be okay for certain parts, the EV market is also one where sustainability is priority. Thus, SSI SCHAEFER has Clear Stream PCR containers that are manufactured with post-consumer recyclable (PCR) material to help keep our waterways clean.  The complete line of ESD containers and dunnage products from SSI SCHAEFER guards against static shock with materials that are conductive, anti-static, or static dissipative to help minimize risks and provides parts protection.

While 2030 seems like a long time from now, 2021 is also expected to deliver 500,000 EV sales in North America according to Guidehouse Insights. In the meantime, we’ll be watching the latest models quietly drive off the showroom floors.
